The brief
Tasked by Penguin’s annual cover redesign competition, I created a front, back, and spine cover for Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Concept
The intention behind my cover design is to present the main character, Daisy, and her pop star life as seemingly perfect—when in reality, this is far from the truth.
I chose to depict this through an illustration of a pair of ‘rose-tinted’ heart sunglasses, which are visibly half-perfect and half-cracked.
The cover’s neon green and pink colour scheme is a nod to the heady and psychedelic 70s era which is where the story begins. Lastly, the use of a handwriting-style typeface for the book’s title intends to replicate Daisy Jones’ writing of song lyrics, a key feature of the storyline.

Marketing:

The first aspect of the book’s marketing depicts bookshops around the UK hosting open-mic karaoke nights to help local singers showcase their talent in honour of new Daisy Jones book cover release. This focuses on the social element of advertising and will reach a wider audience beyond those already interested in the book.

My proposed marketing for Daisy Jones’ cover redesign also focuses on merchandise: readers will be incentivised to preorder by receiving a bundle of branded items including a tote bag, enamel vinyl pin, songwriting notebook, and reflective-cracked glasses directly inspired by the new design.
